Worker Registration Scheme to be Extended

The Government has announced that the Worker Registration Scheme which was due to finish on 30th April 2009 has been extended for another 2 years.

Under the Scheme citizens of the following countries have to register if they wish to work for an employer in the United Kingdom for more than one month - Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Failure to apply within one month of commencing work, employment will be deemed illegal from that date. Successful applicants will receive a Registration Card and Registration Certificate.

Employers are required to provide evidence to support an application to register on the Scheme; failure to ensure that employees comply with the requirements of the Workers Registration Scheme may be subject to a £5,000 fine.
